Atomic Dogs Flyball and Disc Team

FAQ

What is Flyball?
Flyball races match two teams of four dogs each, racing side by side over a 51 foot long course. Each team’s racing lane consists of 4 jumps and a flyball box that tosses a tennis ball at the dog after he pushes a pedal on the front of the box. Each dog must run in relay fashion down the jumps, trigger the release of the ball, retrieve the ball, and return over the jumps. The next dog is released to run the course but cannot cross the start/finish line until the previous dog has reached the start/finish line.

  • · Jump heights are set 4 inches shorter than the shoulder height of the smallest dog racing
  • · First team to have all 4 dogs finish the course without error wins the heat.
  • · Missed jumps or dropped balls require the dog to be rerun after the rest of the team has finished.

Interrested in playing Flyball?
Any dog that is healthy and willing to retrieve a tennis ball is welcome to come and give flyball a try. All breeds including mixes are welcome. Dogs need to be well socialized and come to you when called. Some obedience training is recommended, but not required. Flyball is a rigorous sport for a dog and a workout for the handler. As with any sport it is wise to have a physical from a veterinarian for your dog and an okay from your doctor before beginning training. Most dogs take three to six months to really learn the game.
